Radiation Doses Associated With Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography

To the Editor: Dr Hausleiter and colleagues1 described a cross-sectional, multicenter international experience with CCTA. In particular, the authors assessed the effective radiation dose received by patients, as well as the association of delivered dose with the use of specific dose-reduction strategies. In this study population, the median dose was 12 mSv (interquartile range, 8-18 mSv). Therefore, a quarter of the patients scanned received less than 8 mSv estimated effective dose. On the other hand, the highest quartile received more than 18 mSv, clearly far above most current achieved dosages. While dose range and median dose are informative, the true potential of radiation dose reduction in CCTA in real-world applications can be better estimated by the lowest dose received.
