Career Intentions of MD/PhD Program Graduates—Reply

In Reply: Mr Miller observed that although less than 75% of matriculating MD/PhD students complete their program, those who leave nearly always finish their MD degree. However, the inferences that can be made about noncompleters based on the data included in our analysis are limited. Our sample was restricted to US allopathic medical school graduates who chose to complete the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Graduation Questionnaire (GQ). The data we provided regarding MD/PhD program attrition pertained only to graduates in our study sample who also had completed the AAMC Matriculating Student Questionnaire (MSQ).

We did not define the full extent of MD/PhD program attrition as we were only able to quantify the extent of attrition for those program enrollees (as indicated on the MSQ) who discontinued their MD/PhD program participation but completed the MD degree program requirements (as indicated on the GQ).
