Many new insights into epidemiology, pathogenesis, outcomes measurement, and pharmacologic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have occurred in recent years. This new knowledge warrants a comprehensive, detailed, current book to supplement information already available in general rheumatology and medicine texts. In this 464-page volume, nearly 100 distinguished authors and editors from both sides of the Atlantic provide a broad perspective and unique insights and approaches not readily found in other sources.
One example is the excellent chapter by Zink explaining the details of the various European Biologics Registries, which is contrasted with the chapter by Kremer on the US approach to registries and databases. These chapters can serve as references to help interpret future clinical data forthcoming from these registries. Such registry data are critical to advancing knowledge regarding long-term complications of biologic therapies, particularly malignancies and infections.
