In Reply: Mr Stone and Dr Lipkowitz are indeed proficient in the sport! On the night that the Commentary appeared, I received a lovely message from Dr Brancati, who enjoyed seeing a reprise of his famous 1989 Commentary. He described the reaction he received in 1989 to that piece and admitted to me that the historical origins included therein were indeed a complete fabrication. I had not reviewed the letters to the editor that followed his Commentary and so I missed that fact. Because I could not find original references for those origins, I did construct the sentence to note that these were Brancati's descriptions of the origins.
I immediately informed the JAMA editors of this correspondence and told them I planned to include it in my reply to any letters to the editor, so I thank Stone and Lipkowitz for giving me the chance. I received more personal correspondence . . . [Full Text of this Article]
