The American Medical Association-Resident Physicians Section (AMA-RPS) Governing Council is currently recruiting resident and fellow physicians to fill several leadership positions. The resident representatives report back to the AMA-RPS Governing Council on items of interest to resident physicians and fellows. The following is a summary of the organizations with upcoming vacancies for residents.
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is the nationally recognized accrediting agency for more than 7000 residency training programs in the United States. It meets 3 times yearly to establish general performance parameters for residency programs and to approve specific academic recommendations made by its Residency Review Committees. The AMA-RPS Governing Council appoints the resident representative to the ACGME for a 2-year term.
The Graduate Medical Education Advisory Committee, a subcommittee of the AMA Council on Medical Education, reviews special requirements developed by the ACGME's Residency Review Committees and advises the Council on Medical Education on policies and reports related to graduate medical education. The Council on Medical Education appoints the resident for a 1-year term.
The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) prepares and administers qualifying examinations that have widespread acceptance within both the licensure system for medicine and medical education. The examinations are designed to reflect what is taught in medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. Board members represent the academic, practice, and licensing communities. The NBME has 2 resident representatives who are appointed by the AMA-RPS Governing Council for 4-year terms.
The American Medical Political Action Committee's Board of Directors solicits donations from AMA members and contributes to the campaigns of politicians who make and influence health care legislation. AMPAC also encourages physicians to become involved in political campaigns and to seek public office by offering educational programs through its Campaign Management School and the National Political Education Conference. The AMA Board of Trustees appoints the resident member for a 2-year term.
