In 1992 the American Medical Association-Resident Physicians Section (AMA-RPS) instituted a Policy Promotion Grant program that was endorsed by the AMA's House of Delegates. The program awards grants of up to $500 to resident and fellow physicians who initiate, or are involved in, projects that further AMA policy. A project description of recently awarded grants is listed below.

Building the Foundation
Timothy Reeder, MD, was awarded a grant to help sponsor an educational program entitled Building the Foundation: Financial Management and Career Planning for Residents and Fellows. The program presented attendees with information on choosing between different types of medical practices, evaluating insurance needs, managing student loans, and analyzing employment contracts. Nearly 50 residents and fellows attended the program.

Bolivia 1997
Vincent Grasso, MD, was awarded a grant to help the expense of shipping equipment for a 10-day medical mission to Tarija, Bolivia. Dr Grasso and other physicians distributed medical supplies, provided care to the town's residents, and instructed local physicians in laparoscopic techniques and postoperative care. The project was sponsored by several medical and humanitarian organizations including Ayudamos Inc, which Dr Grasso founded.

Antitobacco Essay Contest
Amber Chatwin, MD, was awarded a grant to support and promote the AMA-RPS national antitobacco essay contest "Smoking Is Not for Me" in the state of New York. The contest encourages sixth through eighth graders to think about the dangers of smoking. The funds will be used to award prizes to the best entries in New York. The top entrant will be forwarded for national judging.

Doctor's Day Fair
Karen Underwood, MD, was awarded a grant to set up a display booth promoting bicycle safety at the Doctor's Day Fair at the Indianapolis Children's Museum. Dr Underwood and other resident physicians showed an educational video, distributed safety brochures and bicycle reflectors, and held a raffle for bicycle helmets. Over 300 children and their parents visited the booth.
