Leadership Opportunities for Residents and Fellows

JAMA. 1999;281:2256.

The American Medical Association-Resident and Fellow Section (AMA-RFS) Governing Council is seeking applications from resident and fellow physicians for leadership positions on AMA councils and other committees. The resident representatives report back to the Governing Council on items of interest to resident physicians and fellows. The following is a summary of the councils and committees with upcoming vacancies for residents.

The Graduate Medical Education Advisory Committee (GMEAC) is a subcommittee of the AMA Council on Medical Education. The GMEAC reviews the requirements developed by each specialty's Residency Review Committee, assists the AMA Council on Medical Education with GME policy, and discusses other issues related to residency training. The committee meets 3 times each year in Chicago, Ill. The Council on Medical Education appoints the resident member to a 1-year term.

The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) prepares and administers qualifying examinations that are widely accepted within both the licensure system for medicine and the medical education system. The NBME currently helps develop the US Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE) and administers Steps 1 and 2 of the USMLE. The AMA-RFS Governing Council appoints the resident member to a 4-year term.

The Resident Observer to the International Medical Graduate (IMG) Section Governing Council serves as a nonvoting participant at IMG Section Governing Council meetings. The IMG Section represents and advocates for IMGs within the AMA. The AMA-RFS Governing Council appoints the resident member to a 1-year term.
