The American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation Leadership Award Program recognizes medical students and resident and fellow physicians who have demonstrated nonclinical leadership in medical arenas, civic organizations, and community service organizations. Award winners will receive an expense-paid trip to the AMA National Leadership Development Conference that will be held March 25-28, 2000, in Miami, Fla. Some of the resident and fellow winners are listed below with a brief description of their accomplishments.
Brent R. Asplin, MD, MPH, served on the board of directors for the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association and was the first resident member of the editorial board for the Annals of Emergency Medicine. He was a congressional fellow for Sen Max Baucus on the Senate Finance Committee. Dr Asplin is a fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Ronnier J. Aviles, MD, serves as vice president for the Mayo Fellow Association, which represents more than 1500 fellows, residents, and medical students at the Mayo Clinic. He has worked with his Internal Medicine Residents Council to bring education and community programs to his residency program. Dr Aviles is an internal medicine resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Sameer A. Bade, MD, serves as president of the Resident's Section of the Maryland State Medical Association. He has served in numerous national leadership positions in religious organizations and has coordinated medical relief projects for refugees through theGlobal Relief Foundation. Dr Bade is an internal medicine resident at Harbor Hospital Center in Glen Burnie, Md.
Jeffrey C. Bates, MD, is the founder and past president of the National MedPeds Residents' Association and publisher of The MedPeds Newsletter. He is the chair-elect of the Texas Medical Association–Resident and Fellows Section. Dr Bates is an internal medicine/pediatrics resident at the Texas A & M University-Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Tex.
Robert M. Biter, MD, serves on the board of directors of Theatre Harrisburg and has created a breast cancer support group that is writing a play about their experiences with the illness. He helped found Her Heart's Wish, a national wish-granting program for terminally ill women, and served as a national health promotion consultant for AmeriCorps. Dr Biter is an obstetrics/gynecology resident at Pennsylvania State University, Hershey.
Rosemary G. Carr, MD, serves as president of the National Capital Area Council of Psychiatric Residents. During medical school, she was president of her branch of the American Medical Women's Association. Dr Carr is a psychiatry resident at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.
Paul F. Currier, MD, served as class president and student body president in medical school and held several leadership positions in college. In addition, he worked as a health policy fellow in the office of Sen Bill Frist and served as a Fulbright Scholar studying medical education in Germany. Dr Currier is a research fellow at the University of Miami, Miami, Fla.
