Last week's Resident Physician Forum introduced 7 of the 25 winners of the American Medical Association's Foundation Leadership Award Program, which recognizes resident and fellow physicians who have demonstrated nonclinical leadership in medical arenas, civic organizations, and community service organizations. An additional 9 winners are presented below.
Kenneth S. Fink, MD, served as a resident representative on the American Academy of Family Physicians Commission on Clinical Policies and Research. He served on the board of Stonewall Recovery Services, a substance abuse treatment center and is working with his state government on substance abuse issues. Dr Fink is a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Joshua B. Gibson, MD, developed a mentoring program, reference materials, computer templates, and an orientation session to improve the educational process for first-year residents in his program. In medical school, he served as student director of the Student Success Network peer tutoring program. Dr Gibson is a psychiatry resident at the University of California, San Francisco.
Mark E. Green, MD, served as president of his medical school class and founded a local club for environmental medicine and a national club for medical students in the military interested in emergency medicine. He has also served in several leadership positions in the US Army. Dr Green is an emergency medicine resident at the Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Tex.
Sandra M. Johnson, MD, is chair of the Resident and Fellows Committee of the American Academy of Dermatology and serves on the board of directors for the American Academy of Dermatology. She has served on committees in several professional associations. Dr Johnson is a dermatology resident at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock.
Charles B. Johnston, MD, serves as president of his house staff organization, where he acts as liaison between residents and faculty, staff, and hospital administration. He serves on several boards and committees at his hospital. Dr Johnston is a family practice resident at Creighton University/St Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
Paul Jung, MD, served as chair of the National Consortium of Resident Organizations. As director of the Health Policy Leadership Institute, he organized an educational program for medical students covering topics such as quality improvement, managed care, and education. Dr Jung is an internal medicine resident at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Pramod Kelkar, MD, served on the governing council of the Mayo Fellows Association, which represents fellows on work environment and training issues. In addition, he cofounded the first mammography and breast cancer detection center in Pune, India. Dr Kelkar is an allergy and immunology fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Mohammed A. Khan, MD, is the director of the Roxbury Community Domestic Violence Project, which promotes the detection, prevention, and treatment of domestic violence in an underprivileged area of Boston, Mass. He has served on several committees in the Massachusetts Medical Society. Dr Khan is an anesthesiology resident at Harvard-Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
Robert H. Labuguen, MD, serves as a resident representative to the American Academy of Family Physicians Committee on Communications. He has also served in leadership positions on several Asian American and religious groups. Dr Labuguen is a family medicine resident at the Medical College of Virginia, Mechanicsville.
