Failure to Report Financial Disclosure Information
To the Editor: I would like to apologize to the editors and readers of JAMA for my failure to fully disclose financial support for programs at the University of Virginia, my employer, in a letter to the editor.1 At the time of submission, I did note that my affiliations included being executive director of the National Social Norms Institute. However, I did not indicate to the editors that this institute was funded by a $2.5 million gift from the Anheuser-Busch Foundation. My current position is executive director of the Department of Student Health (90% effort) and the National Social Norms Institute (10% effort). This omission was not done in an attempt to conceal information, but I recognize that my failure to include this funding resulted in the appearance of lack of transparency. The complete disclosure information is provided below and in an accompanying correction.
Financial Disclosures: Dr Turner reported being executive director of the National Social Norms Institute, which was funded in 2006 by a gift from the Anheuser-Busch Foundation ($2.5 million). The University of Virginia has also received funding from Anheuser-Busch Companies for social norms marketing (Office of Health Promotion, Student Health), public service announcements during certain athletic events, and research projects in the College of Arts and Sciences. None of these programs are linked financially to salary support. Dr Turner also reported that in the past 5 years he has been a consultant for and received speaking fees from Merck and Sanofi Pasteur.
