BACTERIAL CONJUNCTIVITIS

Bacterial conjunctivitis is one of the most common ocular diseases. Most cases are selflimited and resolve uneventfully; however, the frequent use of topical antibiotics usually lessens the duration and complications of infection. A variety of antibiotics suitable for topical administration are effective against most bacteria which cause conjunctivitis. Culturing of bacteria from infected conjunctivae is usually reserved for the very young, the debilitated, fulminant cases, or infections not responsive to therapy.

The extensive use of antibiotics in recent years raises the question of whether the type or drug sensitivity of the infecting bacteria has been influenced. This problem is discussed in a recent issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology.1 Bacteriologic cultures were taken from 2,160 patients with conjunctivitis; the results are compared with other investigations, including a 1954 report of 3,000 patients from the same laboratory.
