MEDICARE PAYMENT PROCEDURES—

The Social Security Administration issued guidelines on how physicians will be paid under medicare and mailed the information to the nation's 280,000 physicians. Also mailed to physicians was the medicare handbook that was sent to the 19.1 million Americans age 65 and older. The handbook explained medicare's benefits.

The mailings were the final major step by Social Security in preparation for medicare's start July 1.

By the May 31 deadline for enlisting in the Part B program of medical benefits, more than 17.2 million aged had enrolled. The two-month extension from the original March 30 cut-off date saw 400,000 to 500,000 additional sign-ups as a result of a publicity campaign by Social Security.

The payment guidelines show how physicians may either:

  • bill their patients as they do now and have the patient apply to the intermediary carrier for reimbursement, or fill out a form and
