MORITZ SCHIFF (1823-1896) EXPERIMENTAL PHYSIOLOGIST

Moritz Schiff, who displayed a great diversity of interests in the comprehensive exploration of biological phenomena, was born in Frankfurt-on-Main. He received his early education in the Senckenberg Institute in Frankfurt, studied medicine at Heidelberg and Berlin, and received the MD degree at Göttingen in 1844.1 Professing little concern for the practice of medicine, his early scientific training attracted him to zoology and particularly ornithology.

In 1845, Schiff proceeded to Paris to study in the Museum des Jardins des Plantes when Magendie and Longet were carrying on their investigations in neurophysiology. From this work came a monograph on the flora of South America. In 1847, Schiff returned to Frankfurt and was appointed director of the ornithologic department of the Zoological Museum. When the time came for academic recognition, his participation as a military surgeon on the side of the revolutionaries in 1848 made him unacceptable to German universities. He . . .
