Recently I bought an old medical book in a bookstore. I bought it not because of interest in the subject but because it was on a table that bore the sign: "Any book 500." It was a big, sturdy volume, and I thought it might suit my purpose. I needed something about 2 inches thick to put under a potted plant in our den.
It turned out to be just the right size, and the brown binding went rather nicely with the deep red of the flower pot. The only trouble was that the plant tilted slightly, no matter which way I turned it. It was then that I noticed several sheets of paper folded and tucked inside the back cover of the book. Once I had removed the wedge of paper, the plant stood up as straight as you please.
