WF. Milroy, native of New York city and a member of the faculty of Omaha Medical College for almost 50 years, described noninfectious hereditary elephantiasis—a contribution recognized by Osler in eponymic identification in his 8th edition of Principles and Practice of Medicine. Milroy attended the University of Rochester for undergraduate education and received one year of medical training at Johns Hopkins University. Subsequently, he entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University with the class of 1883, but qualified for the degree of doctor of medicine in the fall of 1882.1 He defended his thesis on acute lobular pneumonia in children before Francis Delafield, who represented the faculty. Milroy's internship was served at New York City Hospital, with further training as resident physician in the Charity and Maternity Hospitals of New York city.
