The pediatric nurse-practitioner program described by Silver and Associates (p 298) is a concrete example of the ways in which physicians can effectively use the skill and experience of the nurse clinician in providing comprehensive patient care. The amount of time the nurse clinician can save the physician is particularly important. The AMA Committee on Nursing is in agreement with, and puts its support behind, the establishment of programs that will assist the physician in providing the best possible medical care. Further, the Committee believes this program to be an excellent means of attracting more capable men and women into the nursing profession, holding those who are practicing now, and encouraging inactive nurses to return to clinical practice.
