The long awaited textbook, Microbiology by Davis et al, proves well worth waiting for. Each of the authors is a distinguished scientist in one or more fields and, among them, they have had personal experience in clinical infectious diseases and preventive medicine, both civilian and military. Thus they are able to take broad views as well as to treat their own areas of expertise in a highly sophisticated manner. Although directed primarily to "students and investigators of medicine and the allied professions," the authors hope the text will also prove useful to those in biological sciences. The authors aimed to emphasize molecular and genetic aspects of microbiology as well as host parasite relationships and pathogenetic mechanisms, even though these may not yet be explicable on molecular terms. Their hopes and aims are admirably accomplished.
