A Comprehensive Health Plan for a Catholic Diocese

The Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens, NY, when completed will consist of five hospitals located in Brooklyn and Queens owned by the Diocese of Brooklyn. The formation of the center is associated with a $60 million construction program as well as a reorganization of the pattern of patient care by the hospitals.

The following is a brief description of the hospital units as well as the planned new construction.

St. Mary's Hospital, 1298 St. Marks Ave, is a 237-bed hospital, built in 1888 (Figure, 4a), which serves as the family doctor as well as the hospital for the poverty-ridden area of Bedford-Stuyvesant. This hospital will be completely replaced by a new 350-bed unit at a cost of $16 million (Figure, 4).
