To the Editor:—
Tuft (204:1010, 1968), in commenting on the report of Waldorf et al (203:831, 1968) concerning the impairment in skin reactivity of older individuals after the induction of delayed skin test reaction by the applications of patch tests of 2, 4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), states that the skin reactivity of older individuals is apparently impaired both in relation to immediate-type and to delayed-type skin test reactions. Tuft concludes that such impairment in skin test reaction in the elderly should be remembered in their employment in clinical practice.
However, it must be emphasized that the results of the experimental induction of delayed skin test reaction by the application of patch tests of DNCB does not necessarily correlate with the delayed reactions seen in clinical practice. First, while DNCB will sensitize the vast majority of individuals, clinical contactants, in general, sensitize only a small percentage of the population. Second, sensitization
