Heart Transplant Guide, Better Osteopath Liaison Approved By Delegates
Guidelines on heart transplantation have been adopted by the American Medical Association.
The AMA's House of Delegates approved the guidelines following consideration of a report on the stillcontroversial procedure, presented during the 22nd Annual Clinical Convention on Miami Beach.
The report notes: "The cause of (a donor's) death must be evident and, of an irreversible type. The fact of death must be established by adequate, current and acceptable scientific evidence in the opinion of physicians making the determination.
"The determination of death in organ donors must be made by no less than two physicians not associated with the surgical team performing the transplant."
A supplement to the report cautions that the prospective donor continues to have the "right to the best medical care."
The House-approved statement also offers guidelines in other problems involving cardiac transplants.
