Paul Gottlieb Werlhof, severely afflicted with gouty arthritis since his early 30's, provided one of the first descriptions of purpura haemorrhagica. He was born in Helmstedt, Germany, the son of the professor of law at the University.1 He was a remarkable youth interested in natural sciences and language and, at the age of 17, began the study of medicine at the University. His favorite teachers were Meibohm and Heister, who directed his interests particularly to anatomical dissection and pathological observations. Werlhof finished his formal training in 1721, practiced for two years in Peine, near Hiedesheim, and in 1723 received the MD degree from Helmstedt, with a Latin dissertation, Use and Abuse of Medicines. Seeking greater opportunities, he moved to Hanover where he attracted a large local clientele as well as patients from other countries.
