To the Editor:—

Dr. Rodbard (205: 940, 1968) gives recommendations for treatment of trauma to the root of the nail. This painful injury can be painlessly relieved by (1) straightening out a paper clip, (2) heating one end in a burning match, and (3) applying this heated end to the nail and burning through it, which decompresses the hematoma. With gentle pressure on the paper clip, the operation will be painless. A bandage completes the procedure.

Dr. Jonas was one day ahead of a variant:

The free end of the paper clip is held in the flame of an ignited alcohol sponge.... The blood quickly "cools" the hot clip, and there need be no fear of burning. There is usually a sudden gush of blood accompanied by a sigh of relief.
