To the Editor.—
The letter of Reusch and Bunch (210:2285, 1969) concerning serum zinc levels in diabetes prompts us to submit additional data that we have obtained. As part of a study of leukocyte alkaline phosphatase, we measured the zinc and magnesium content of plasma, leukocytes, and erythrocytes in patients with a variety of disorders. Such measurements were made by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
In 12 patients with diabetes mellitus, the concentrations of both zinc and magnesium in plasma, white blood cells, and red blood cells did not differ significantly from the values obtained in normal individuals of comparable age, sex, and race (Table).
