Since the renaissance of mammography in 1960, Dr. Witten has been actively engaged in the study and teaching of this subject. His extensive experience preeminently qualifies him for the authorship of this volume.
The first chapter, on roentgenography of the breast, dwells primarily on the accuracy of mammography, with limited discussion on actual roentgenographic technique. This emphasis, with appropriate reference notations, is a refreshingly succinct yet complete statement on the uses, limitations, and accuracy of this study. The problems contributing to the errors in diagnosis of breast neoplasm are adequately discussed.
In the second chapter, the roentgenographically identifiable elements to be found in the normal breast are discussed, and even more important, clearly labeled in the figures. The variations in normal roentgenographic appearance are clearly indicated, as are the variations in the density with age, menstrual status, and pregnancy. Most of the errors in diagnosis occur in the dense breast.
