Fight Against Poison Oak, Poison Ivy Continues

"We are probably in the best position ever to solve the problem of poison ivy and poison oak dermatitis," said two dermatologists during the recent meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology in Bal Harbour, Fla.

According to William L. Epstein, MD, professor and chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University of California Medical School, San Francisco, and Edmund Lowney, MD, PhD, professor and director of the Division of Dermatology at Ohio State University, Columbus, a group of dermatologists are contemplating a cooperative research venture on the problem within the new National Program for Dermatology.

"With the help of such a joint effort," they said, "it may be possible to develop an effective means of immunization against these poisonous plants within five years."
