To the Editor:—
Regarding "Allergy to Local Anesthetics" (207:356, 1969) and subsequent correspondence in LETTERS, I have found a useful alternative in those situations in which there is a history of "caine allergy." When the need for prompt therapy exists, injectable diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl) produces sufficient local anesthesia to permit most small surgical procedures, aspirations, and local infiltrations.
While this is noted in major texts of pharmacology, it is not known to the practicing physicians generally.
