To the Editor:—

Recently I saw a patient who had been smoking five to six marihuana cigarettes per day for the past few years. The patient had a marked bronchitis, the symptoms of which were of recent origin.

This raised the question whether there might be some association between the bronchitis and the smoking of marihuana.

Much has been written and said about the systemic and carcinogenic effects of smoking tobacco because of the tars and resins in cigarette smoke. Concerted efforts are being made to ban cigarettes because of it. Yet, marihuana smoke is composed of many undifferentiated tars and resins, partly because of the adulterants that are added, or crudeness of preparation. I have never heard or read anything about the probable effects upon the bronchial tree or of any possible carcinogenic effects of smoking "pot."
