To the Editor.—
In the LETTERS column (210:134, 1969), Elizabeth Craven, MD, reports the effectiveness of haloperidol (Haldol) in the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.
May I confirm this observation and mention that I have treated two frank cases at Haverford State Hospital in the past two years with similar success?
These were older patients in their 60's rather than of pediatric age. Both patients served as their own control and neither could function or be controlled on a regimen of thioridazine (Mellaril), trifluoperazine (Stelazine) hydrochloride, chlorprothixene (Taractan), chlorpromazine (Thorazine), meprobamate (Equanil), benztropine (Cogentin) mesylate, trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride (Artane), or barbiturates.
I have tried haloperidol in other apparent compulsive behavior problems without frank "tics," but with only indifferent results.
