Meningitis Vaccine Trials In Children Begin
The first clinical trials in children of a meningococcal meningitis vaccine are beginning this month in Connecticut.
The vaccine has been found safe and effective in adults during two years of large-scale testing at Army recruit camps. It is specifically effective against type C, one of the three major groups of meningococci.
About 60 patients at Newington Children's Hospital, Newington, Conn, are receiving the vaccine. The trials are being conducted by one of the vaccine's developers, Irving Goldschneider, MD, assistant professor of pathology, University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington.
The vaccine, and a similar one against type A meningococci, were developed at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington, DC. The co-developers are Malcolm S. Artenstein, MD, chief of the institute's bacteriology department, a key figure in development of a rubella vaccine, and Emil C. Gotschlich, MD, now an associate at Rockefeller University,
