Caesar Boeck, who described the cutaneous lesions and their histologic structure of the condition sometimes identified as Besnier-Boeck-Schaumann disease, was born in Lier, Norway.1 He graduated in 1871 from Christiania Medical School (Oslo) and pursued general practice for several years, with a special interest in dermatology. In 1874, he spent a year on the Continent, mainly in dermatology clinics, and particularly in Vienna where he attended the lectures of the aging Hebra. Upon returning to Oslo Boeck was assistant for three years in the dermatologic clinic of the Rikshospitalet and in 1889 was made chief of the clinic. He reached professorial rank at the University in 1895, became a full professor in 1896, dean of the faculty in 1907, and professor emeritus in 1915. Meanwhile, in 1880, he founded the journal that continues today as the Tidsskrift for den Norske Laegeforening.
