The sixth edition of General Urology contains two new chapters, embryology of the genitourinary system by Tanagho, and radioisotopic kidney studies by Powell and Weiss. Otherwise this edition is similar to the fifth edition, published in 1966.
Dr. Smith, as in previous editions of the book, does not attempt to cover the various aspects of urology in detail or acknowledge differing approaches and points of view. Rather, he presents a brief, sound, well-organized system of urology based upon his own ideas, experience, and interpretation of the urologic literature. The author's personality is evident, and in places his opinions are mixed too freely with what most of us would regard as fact. Nearly every urologist would differ with the author on minor matters here and there, but few would have major exceptions.
The book is intended primarily for the medical student and the physician who is not a specialist in urology.
