To the Editor.—
Dr. Tuft, (210:1925, 1969), when discussing adverse reactions to influenza immunization, purports to quote from an English report when he says, "Even though the vaccine was offered free to 2500 employees, only 1850 came back for the second dose."1
In fact, apart from a very small number of cases with a history of previous allergic response, protection was conferred by a single dose of 1.0 ml. What the report actually says is:
The reaction produced by the vaccine quickly became known and eventually only 1850 individuals were immunized out of 2500 original applicants. It is clear that the vaccine in its present form has many disadvantages for use in an industrial population where continuity of work is required.
