Crusades are wonderful, and the most recent one surpasses expectation. The knights, led by that foremost crusader, Ralph Nader, are the nonsmokers arrayed against the Saracens who smoke cigarettes while literally in flight. The crusaders seek to ban smoking on commercial airliners or to force the airlines to seat smokers in separate sections of the planes. The latter proposal would pose problems for the harried reservation and check-in clerks and would be impossible of accomplishment on flights that do not afford advance seat reservations. Otherwise, it is desirable.
The Wall Street Journal of Jan 29, 1970 carried an account of letters written by Chief Justice Warren E. Burger protesting about puffing passengers on a flight from Washington, DC, to Minneapolis. The American Medical News of April 7,1970 printed a similar letter from Ralph Berg, Jr., MD. The editors of both newspapers received a flood of responses, most of them supportive
