To the Editor:—
The Federation of Western Societies of Neurological Science (FWSNS), consisting of eight component groups, representing most of the neuroscientists in the Western States, at its annual meeting in Phoenix, Ariz, March 5 to 8, has recognized that federal support through the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke (NINDS) for teaching and research in neurosciences has been a major factor in improving the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders during the last 25 years. The FWSNS realizes that to maintain the momentum of these programs of research requires a continuation of this support. The FWSNS also recognizes that any reduction of support for training inevitably commits this nation to a long-term reduction in research effort in the neurosciences. Any reduction of support to this area seems unthinkable in view of the central position of the nervous system in all aspects of health and the obvious social impact
