A New Training Program in Colorado

The first class of child health associate students entered the University of Colorado Medical Center in July 1969. Legislation licensing graduates and regulating their practice as child health associates has been enacted by the Colorado Legislature.

The program, sponsored by the University of Colorado and funded by the Commonwealth Fund, the Carnegie Corporation, and a federal grant, is an innovative attempt to increase the supply of pediatric services in Colorado, and to supplement the medical center's existing program for training "pediatric nurse practitioners"¹ through development of more highly skilled health professionals whose problemsolving and decision-making capabilities are expanded. The allied health worker trained through this program will function in a pediatrician's office when the physician is "directly and personally available."
