A major step forward in pollution study was made last month in the area of solid waste control when the US Census Bureau counted all of the flush toilets available and functional as of April 1, 1970. Results have not yet been tabulated but it is expected they will show a substantial increase in absolute numbers of flush toilets available, but somewhat of a decrease in the number available per person. The latter results, however, may be somewhat skewed because of sampling methods. Although both population and toilets have increased greatly since 1960, in some areas people have outstripped plumbing. Thus, despite the increase in flush toilets, more persons are presumably using each flush toilet, and there is therefore a slight decrease in relative availability.
