In 1962, the University of Wisconsin established the Interdisciplinary Studies Committee on the Future of Man.1 As its name implies, the Committee has rightfully shared with other elements of our society a growing conviction that the survival of civilization is not something to be taken for granted.
Early in 1967, the Committee had posed to it four questions by the Board of Regents relating to the purposes of higher education, the goals for the university as an entity, the goals for each segment of the university, and the extent to which students and student organizations should be involved in university government. In 1969, the Committee responded to the first question as follows:
In answer to the Regents' question: "What are the purposes of higher education?" this Committee responded that:
The primary purpose of the University Is to provide an environment In which faculty and students Can discover, examine critically, Preserve,
