Periodic Recertification

Periodic recertification is apparently being considered by a number of specialty boards, but none has so far adopted a program for actually getting it done. About two years ago the Long Range Planning Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine reported to the board that periodic recertification of its diplomates should be undertaken. The board accepted this recommendation in principle a year ago and has discussed its implementation since then. In pursuing the subject the board members have had some of the feelings of a hunter going into tall grass after a wounded Cape buffalo. Though we have, in fact, been hesitant, we have taken one definite step. We have announced that we will award a qualifying certificate to candidates who have passed our written, or qualifying examination, but that they will be subject to a requirement for renewal of this, or any higher level of certificate subsequently earned, at a date and by a mechanism to be determined by the board in the future.
