And now edition number nine—a respectable number that qualifies this work for a secure place among the sacred books of medical students. Owners of editions one through eight will wonder, shall we add to our wisdom by investing in number nine? And what will lure strangers to this text? This time a paperback, on the order of a telephone book but smaller, and yet too large for a bulging coat pocket. This is the style of the 70s—cloaking established knowledge in the unassuming garb of the airport book mart; less forbidding, no doubt; lighter; we hope cheaper; and probably more profitable to publisher. If students no longer graduate in cap and gown, why should their texts wear formal clothes? For this new edition previous contributors have dressed up their proven chapters by adding some contemporary dash. In some instances chapters have been rewritten by either old or new contributors.
