This beautifully illustrated book is a tribute to Professor Philip Schwartz who more than anyone else has emphasized the role of amyloid in the aging process, its appearance in the central nervous system, heart, and pancreas, and its significance as a major neurologic disorder.
The book has three major sections. Part 1 is a historic review, with four pages of new facts and concepts. Unfortunately, the latter is essentially a compilation of references that omits many significant papers on the recent literature. Part 2 contains the bulk of the author's investigations. The material is presented in a personal case method, bringing to light aspects that Dr. Schwartz has found interesting and important. The hundreds of cases examined are never presented in tabular form, however, so that precise data on incidence and extent of amyloid in each organ, number of organs examined, etc, are not readily available.
