To the Editor.—
We were unaware of the various references Dr. Goldman mentioned in his letter. Our technique was new in that it was significantly different (I think an improvement) from the prevailing practices of barbiturate withdrawal on the West Coast, where the technique of Wulff, as described, was unknown or not utilized.
Because of the large number of barbiturate-dependent patients and shortage of hospital beds, we are now using the technique on an outpatient basis at the Haight-Ashbury Medical Clinic with good results and now have a series of about 25 patients.
