Report of the Council on Foods and Nutrition to the AMA Board of Trustees

A merica is now aware that malnutrition is here. Attention has been sharply focused on problems of hunger and malnutrition in the United States by the Citizens' Board of Inquiry report, "Hunger USA," and by the CBS television program, "Hunger in America." Following these reports, most major newspapers and TV companies published documentaries highlighting local or national examples of dismal poverty and malnutrition. The Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Related Human Needs has been holding hearings for more than a year.

The Citizens' Board of Inquiry into Hunger and Malnutrition in the United States opened a Pandora's box. While its report has received criticisms because of inadequate techniques and dependence upon evidence of a subjective nature, it contains useful data and a good review of current literature.
