Mass production of vaccine for meningitis delayed

The new vaccine for Type C meningococcal meningitis is in a sort of administrative and scientific limbo. It may be some time before large stocks of a licensed product are available.
The Army began general, but limited, use of the vaccine several months ago. (JAMAMEDICAL NEWS211:1107 [Feb 16] 1970). The vaccine is, quite rightly, a source of Army pride. It was developed at the Army's Walter Reed Institute of Research, Washington, DC, by a team led by Malcolm Artenstein, MD, chief developer of the rubella vaccine.
