In the current debate on the abortion issue, which seems to have become only more muddled with passage of the amended resolution at the recent AMA annual convention in Chicago, it would seem that a few more observations could do no harm. First, the widely publicized urging by the president of the National Federation of Catholic Physicians' Guilds that its 6,000 members resign from the American Medical Association is ill-timed and in poor taste. Such tactics, no matter for what purpose intended, are of little service to either those physicians or to the remaining membership of the American Medical Association—except perhaps to return Catholic physicians to that parochialism from which they have just now been emerging.
