DR. JOHN ARRADONDO, Junior Assistant Resident, the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, and Assistant in Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine: A 39-year-old obese photographer was hospitalized on Sept 11, 1969, with a chief complaint of blurred vision of five months' duration. The patient had been well until 1967 when he noted the gradual onset of polyuria, polydipsia, and weight loss. In April 1969, blurring of vision occurred in the left eye. An inflammatory process in the anterior chamber was observed and the patient was treated successfully with dilatation of the pupils with 10% phenylephrine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution and local steroids. One month later, he noted blurring of vision in the right eye, which responded to the same medications.

In July, the patient was admitted to another hospital for severe, cramping pain in the left flank. A diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was made on the basis of an abnormal glucose . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
