Costs of Automated Multiphasic Screening

Last year Collen and coworkers1 reported a cost analysis for the year Sept 1, 1967, through Aug 31, 1968, during which 47,404 patients were tested in the 15 phases of two multiphasic screening programs. Each laboratory operated 40 hours weekly with a case load of approximately 500 patients a week. Total direct costs for the year were $585,249 of which the largest expenditure ($407,835) was for salaries and wages, including fringe benefits. Thus, the direct cost per patient was $12.34. Indirect costs brought the amount to $14.28 per patient, and when expenses for data processing and central staff were added, the total was $21.32.
The authors emphasized that a unit cost of $21.32 was critically related to screening 2,000 patients a month. If the number of patients had been 1,000, it was estimated that the unit cost would have been as much as $50. On the other hand, costs
