To the Editor.—
The case report of an acute psychotic reaction secondary to marihuana use, submitted by Dr. Persyko (212:1527, 1970), is a welcome addition to the literature. It is essential that such cases be documented so as to clarify the issue about the effects of this drug.
I would, however, like to take issue with his minimization of both the extent of use and the severity of reactions to this drug. A more extensive search of the literature would have uncovered that marihuana use is not limited to a "subculture on the fringe," but cuts across all boundaries of age, social, economic, and educational levels of our society.1
Relating the "scarcity of descriptions of marihuana psychosis" to the "mildness of marihuana effects" and the "transient nature of marihuana psychosis" is not a statement of fact, and is dangerously misleading. In the older, as well as the more
