To the Editor.—
The comments of Drs. Klein and Davis (212:1963, 1970) are well taken. Were it not for its importance, our disagreement over the effectiveness of current "antidepressant" drugs might well end at this point. To present a detailed rebuttal of their statement would simply be questioning who is better able to assess the results of others' studies in this area.
I suggest that interested readers refer to a large-scale assessment of this problem published by the Psychopharmacology Research Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health. This work, "studies on the Effectiveness of Antidepressant Drugs" by Smith et al (Psychophar-macol Bull [special issue] March 1969), is far more systematic and thorough than the arguments that can be developed here. The key sentence is, "In well-designed studies, the difference between the effectiveness of antidepressant drugs and placebo are not impressive."
