Smallpox Vaccination for Chronic Herpetic Ulcers

To the Editor.—

The article by doctors J. M. Neff and J. M. Lane "Vaccinia Necrosum Following Smallpox Vaccination for Chronic Herpetic Ulcers," (213:123, 1970) should have added to it "In people with diseases affecting the reticuloendothelial system or those receiving immuno-suppressive therapy."

An all-inclusive statement that smallpox vaccination for chronic herpetic ulcers is a potentially dangerous practice and "a form of supposed therapy that should be discontinued" is inappropriate.

I do not believe that people using this modality of therapy in patients with chronic recurrent herpes simplex feel that it is a panacea, but I am sure that those few individuals who have been helped by the procedure would take issue with the authors. It has been the experience of most people using this therapy that only the occasional patient who suffers from multiple and frequent recurrent herpetic episodes receives any value from smallpox vaccination therapy.
