Much of the current activity in continuing medical education is closely related to motivation of the practicing physician to keep up-to-date.

Some of this activity can be identified as improved and more visible recognition of the physician who participated in certain amounts and types of continuing education. The Physician's Recognition Award of the AMA is in this category, providing a voluntary option for the physician to document his ongoing interest in self-renewal. Although the award program is less than two years old, its vigor is shown by the growing number of physicians who apply for it. In the initial planning, it was hoped that 10,000 physicians would qualify for the award during its first year. As of July 1, 1970, more than 14,000 physicians had qualified.
